Genetics Grad Students at UGA
In many ways, grad school is the time to make contacts, establish a reputation, and concentrate on a specific field of study. Your commitment to reading and understanding the literature in your field, designing a sound research project, and completing that project all reflect upon your ability to survive and thrive as a scientist. Fortunately, your mistakes in these areas are chalked up to the learning process, and there are plenty of guides to get you back on track if you should begin to founder. It's a caffeine-filled, high-stress life, but one definitely full of opportunities.
It's not all work and no play either. We are careful not to let grad school overwhelm us, so sometimes we go paddling on the Broad River near Athens, or have a backyard cookout or Tiki-torch party, or go over to the UGA Creamery (right next door) for ice creamor better yet to the Smoothie store! The gym facilities see a lot of use, as do certain local bars and restaurants.
We hope this web site will help you get oriented. We've tried to tell you a little about what to expect as a grad student in Genetics, and to help you get the most out of your time here, both academically and socially. Welcome!
